Holy Communion, not Tequila Shots

“This means that every time you eat this bread and drink from this cup you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes”; 1 Corinthians 11:26- Good News Bible

Oh well, I knew what the Bible expected of me. I also know that things like this happen when you skip church for a long while. Judge me not my fellow sinners. “of course I f**ked up, who never f**k up, hands in the air. No hands?”

First-hand embarrassment never gets old. So, late last year, I had 4 different people randomly challenge me to go back to church (I hadn’t been to church in years- you can criticize me all you want, you aren’t God ). I am a believer in Christ. I just didn’t find a place of worship with which to connect.

I live my regular human life and reverence God always, I only did not do it in a format where “two or three are gathered”. In March 2022, I decided to visit a nearby church and reconnect, honestly, I needed that sense of belonging at the time. Since then, I’ve been attending church every Sunday, and I was beginning to get that church feeling back again. We were asked to fast and pray for three days, observing the holy communion rite on the third day. I attended church for all three days, and I don’t know how I remember this happening, but I know it was a thing (I mean taking the communion). You queue up and they either ask you to pick it up and put it in your mouth yourself or they do it for you. This particular evening, after the general prayer over the wine and bread, we were served line by line, and I am not sure why but what I saw were shot glasses on the tray. When it came to my turn, my dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t bother looking at others. I picked up my cup and downed it like it was a tequila shot, the only thing missing was the lime and salt to go with it. I asked the gentleman passing the tray if it was fine to drop my cup back in the tray, and with a surprising look, he said, “you were meant to wait”. Guys, you should have seen my face too.

Anyway, they handed me another cup, passed the bread, and this time, I made sure to wait. The pastor prayed, and I waited until everyone had drunk from their cups before I did too. Here I was, thinking it was the same thing for the bread. We started praying again and he asked everyone to stretch forth their hands in prayer, and guys, this ignorant sinner was the only one who still had her bread in her hand (I have never been confused). I had to hide mine and was curious as to when everyone had eaten theirs. I just kept laughing at myself the whole day and trying to imagine what was going on in the minds of everyone that must have noticed this ignorant lady. What is wrong with this sinner? (I bet they were wondering).

I cannot be the only one that didn’t know how it worked, please guys, I hope I am not.

Well, I am back in church and I am loving every bit of it. I hope to be better every time I leave the church premises. So help me Lord.
