I met a stranger that became my boss that doubled as a friend and a father in 382 days. Sounds very rare, I know. Work was beyond work, work became fun and it is true what they say that “A truly great boss is hard to find, difficult to part with and impossible to forget”, well, this is my reality, I could never forget you even if I tried.

Life has a funny way of reminding us of its unpredictability, doesn’t it? We live life like we own it.

We hustle through our days, chasing dreams, shuffling challenges, complaining, cheering on and sometimes forgetting to pause and appreciate the people who make our journey worthwhile.

This year started with big plans and even bigger dreams. I and this stranger turned friend sat down, discussing strategies, brainstorming ideas, and sharing laughs along the way. You called me “B,” everytime, and always reminded me of being a favourite. Complimented my work ethics, scolded me where necessary and everytime I deserved it, teased me about a lot of things including how I always received free things and I should send my regards to the men that took care of me. You always told me to tell them to take me to mama real quick and we would banter about it.

Even days that seemed like I was carrying the world on my shoulder or what seemed like a herculean task at work, you never failed to pull me through. Through every twist and turn, you were there — a steady presence, a guiding light, a friend.

You were more than just a boss, you were the father figure I needed in the workplace. I jokingly called you my “office daddy.” You were a fountain of knowledge, and a true leader in every sense of the word. I used to ask how you did these things and you just smile and shake your head.

Even though you had your tricks up your sleeve sometimes, you truly knew how to handle life’s challenges. You played your cards with such skill and elegance, like a master of the game. Your intelligence and talent were evident in everything you did, and you made a lasting impression on everyone lucky enough to know you.

You were the heart and soul of our team.

And now, as I sit here grappling with the reality of your absence, my heart sincerely feels heavy with sorrow. Your untimely departure has left a void that words cannot adequately express. However, I do find solace in the knowledge that I had the privilege of experiencing you, even though it was for a short time. I am glad I was able to let you know how amazing you are and how grateful I am for you. I wish I had more time with you, more moments to share, more memories to create. But life, as they say, has its own plans — plans that we can never fully understand or control.

Your passing reminded me of how fragile life is. We tend to think we’re invincible, that time won’t catch up with us. But your leaving nudged me and showed me just how fleeting life is. It’s a reminder to cherish every moment and hold onto the love that connects us all.

To your family, I extend my deepest condolences. May they find comfort in the love and support of those around them, and may they take solace in knowing that you touched so many lives in such profound ways.

As for me, I will carry your memory in my heart always — a reminder of the extraordinary person you were and the profound impact you had on those fortunate enough to know you. Rest in peace, dear boss. You will be dearly missed, but never forgotten.

Cheers to you Mr P — To a boss who guided with insight and inspiration, recognized accomplishments, encouraged and appreciated employees and modelled thoughtfulness day after day.

Thank you for your part in my journey!
