We rise by lifting others

Today is for May because we are in May — no pun intended. There is a lot to say, but I don’t want this person to frame it.

I met May in 2021, July to be precise. I reached out to her because I needed someone in the field I was about to explore as a novice.

“Be brave enough to start a conversation that matters.”

Reaching out to strangers who have established themselves as thought leaders in whatever niche, career path, or business you decide to pursue is high on the list of things that will help you succeed.

My sole wish concerning this is that you meet someone who enjoys what they are doing, is committed to it, is passionate about helping people, and has a beautiful heart I simply just described May.

May was willing to help a complete stranger. We were only following each other on Twitter, and I have no memory of when we became followers, but the point is, she was very welcoming. She answered my questions succinctly, relayed where I could get source materials, and even offered to assist me for as long as I needed it.

May would randomly call me to check in on me and see how far I’d progressed in my development. She honestly made me a project among her many, always encouraged me with kind words, and was willing to help me even when I needed it at midnight or early in the morning.

May worked her 9–5 at the time we started talking, and she went on to found a digital marketing agency dedicated to assisting ambitious small businesses.

This, I promise you, is not a paid ad. I have seen her put in all of the effort and energy it takes, and the astonishing part is that all of this has been organic. One of the most organic brand growths I have seen, which only demonstrates how effective the services they provide are. Everything feels like it comes easily for her, but I can only imagine the amount of work she has put into yearssss (allow me to emphasize) of becoming. It is almost like she was a walking marketing data set.

Anyway, that’s enough tooting of May’s horns. Here is to me appreciating May and being super grateful that she is a part of my growth. This is to wish her a beautiful life, deserving of all the good things her heart desires.

I have a couple of other amazing humans like May. Yes, I am lucky and blessed. Without the mentors I’ve had thus far, I wouldn’t be where I am now. Now, I’m hoping to be able to do the same for others and continue the tradition. We must ensure that the cycle does not simply cease.

It matters when someone genuinely cares about your learning and development, even if it’s only for ten minutes during a busy day.

I hope you find your May when you need one, and I hope you get to become a May to someone. If you already have a May, appreciate them when you can. ❤️
